Musicista
completo, grande specialista del contrabbasso ma anche, all'occorrenza,
valido pianista, soprattutto grande band leader, ha caratterizzato la
stagione d'oro nella quale il jazz era l'accompagnamento musicale della
nuova cultura, non importa se bianca e nera. In grado di organizzare
incursioni del jazz nei territori della musica "colta",
nell'impegno politico, soprattutto in senso antirazzista (la celebre
invettiva "Fables Of Faubus",
"dedicata" al governatore dell'Alabama). Così come evasioni e
momenti improntati al puro divertimento, massimo esempio del quale è il
disco Tijuana Moods, ispirato alla
fuga nelle follie della città di confine messicana, condotta assieme al
suo fido batterista di una vita, Dannie Richmond.
Di carattere intemperante e umorale, è stato tutt'altro che un saggio
amministratore del suo talento, ma ciononostante ha lasciato un ricordo
indelebile della sua arte, e una traccia importante anche nel mondo del
rock, dove è stato uno dei musicisti più amati, per esempio dai Pentangle
che ripresero con grande efficacia il suo capolavoro
Good Bye Pork Pie Hat dedicato a
Lester Young, o da
Joni Mitchell, che dedicò
al musicista un intero album, omonimo.
