Un
classico di Jagger e Richards dall'album Let It Bleed
dei Rolling Stones (1969). Citata in un momento clou del basilare film
Il grande freddo (The Big Chill) di
Lawrence Kasdan, enuncia una apparentemente banale ma sempre valida verità: "non
puoi avere quello che vuoi, ma se ci provi, qualche volta, potresti anche
ottenere quello che ti serve".
Lo fa attraverso una serie di esempi metaforici, tratti però dalla esperienza di
vita di quegli anni della rock band prototipo per tutto il genere.
Il primo esempio è un tormentato rapporto tra uomo e donna. Il primo uomo
vorrebbe la libertà, ma è messo sotto ai piedi di lei. Lei ha quello che vuole.
Ma la ritroviamo alla fine della canzone con il suo uomo metaforicamente
sanguinante, il suo amore è stato ucciso, alla fine non ha avuto quello che
voleva. E lui invece ha forse avuto quello che voleva, la libertà (senza di
lei).
I dimostranti del secondo verso vorrebbero cambiare il mondo, ma si limitano a
urlare la loro frustrazione negli slogan. Ma forse proprio questo sfogo sarà il
loro risultato.
Mister Jimmy è un drogato (si dice che potrebbe essere addirittura una allusione
a Jimi Hendrix) che attende paziente di comprare le pillole che possono tenerlo
in vita, e la lezione vale anche per lui.
